Exploring the Benefits of TMS for Treatment-Resistant Depression

Treatment-resistant depression describes depression that has not improved after at least two antidepressant trials. Many people try several medications, and some still have symptoms after months of treatment. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses magnetic pulses to target brain areas involved in mood regulation. When standard approaches have not worked, TMS may offer another option.

  • Noninvasive Outpatient Sessions
  • Coordinated Psychiatric Care
  • Schedule a Psychiatric TMS Evaluation

Targeted Brain Stimulation

TMS uses an electromagnetic coil placed against the scalp. The coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in a specific brain region, usually the left prefrontal cortex, which helps regulate mood. This has helped some with depression symptoms, so it may be included in your care. Here is what sets this procedure apart from other treatments:

  • No surgery or implants: TMS is noninvasive, so you don’t need to worry about an operation or a device placed in your body.
  • Focused action: Medications travel through your whole body, but TMS acts on one targeted area of the brain.
  • A different approach: Because TMS works differently, it may help when medications have not.
  • Use with medications: TMS can be used alongside your current medications.

Noninvasive Outpatient Sessions

Treatment takes place in an outpatient office. You stay awake during each session, and no anesthesia is needed. A typical course involves sessions five days a week for about four to six weeks. Each session lasts 20 to 40 minutes, with the exact length based on your provider’s protocol. During treatment, you will hear clicking sounds and have light tapping on your scalp. Some people notice scalp discomfort or headaches, but these often decrease over the first weeks.

Your provider screens your history before treatment starts. Since you remain alert, you can usually drive home and return to daily tasks afterward. Some people bring headphones or a book to pass the time during sessions, so ask what you are recommended to bring.

Communicate openly with your provider throughout the process. If you have discomfort or concerns, let your care team know. They can adjust the settings for better comfort and effectiveness, so you can have a tailored treatment plan.

Coordinated Psychiatric Care

Your provider reviews past medications, and they ask about your current symptoms. A psychiatric evaluation comes first, helping determine whether TMS fits your needs. If TMS is a good fit, your provider will explain the schedule, and you can ask questions before starting. Medication management continues alongside TMS. Your psychiatrist tracks your symptoms and may adjust doses as needed. Results vary from person to person.

Open communication with your provider matters. If something is off or you have concerns, bring it up. Your feedback helps your care team make informed adjustments, and it makes sure you get the most out of your treatment. It is a nasal spray used with an oral antidepressant in a certified clinic. Your provider may discuss SPRAVATO if treatment is not suitable and explain how the options compare.

Schedule a Psychiatric TMS Evaluation

The first step is a psychiatric evaluation. Gather a list of past medications and doses, and bring it to your appointment. Your provider will review your history, and you will discuss whether TMS or another option fits your situation. Write down any questions about scheduling, side effects, or insurance before your visit. Contact your office to schedule your evaluation while learning more about TMS.
