Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed. Repetitive strain, poor footwear, and tight calf muscles commonly contribute, and each can place excessive stress on this tissue over time. Treatment usually involves stretching, anti-inflammatory medication, and custom orthotics. Here is more information on the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for plantar fasciitis:

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. It connects the heel bone to the toes, and it supports the arch while absorbing shock during walking and running. When this tissue is subjected to excessive stress or tension over time, it can become irritated and inflamed, resulting in a condition known as plantar fasciitis.

What Causes It?

Several factors contribute to plantar fasciitis. Repetitive stress from activities such as running, dancing, or standing for extended periods strains the plantar fascia, and this strain accumulates gradually. When the tissue endures this load over time, small tears can form, which triggers inflammation and pain.

Tight calf muscles limit ankle flexibility, and this limitation places additional load on the fascia. High arches or flat feet change how weight distributes across the foot, which can worsen strain. Obesity adds extra pressure with every step. Worn-out or unsupportive shoes fail to cushion the foot properly, so the fascia absorbs more impact than it should.

Age plays a role as well. The plantar fascia loses some of its elasticity over time. Because the tissue becomes less flexible, older adults are more susceptible to injury. The risk rises further when other contributing factors are present, but consulting a podiatrist can help.

What Are the Symptoms?

Plantar fasciitis presents with a range of symptoms that typically develop gradually, beginning as mild discomfort before progressing into persistent pain that interferes with daily movement. Common symptoms include:

  • A sharp, stabbing pain near the heel
  • Stiffness or tenderness along the arch and bottom of the heel
  • Swelling in the heel area

Recognizing these symptoms early is beneficial, as timely intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and support a more effective recovery.

What Are the Treatment Options?

If plantar fasciitis responds to conservative treatment, patients may recover without needing surgery. Stretches and exercises that target the calf muscles and plantar fascia help restore flexibility, and they reduce tension on the affected tissue. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications help manage pain and reduce swelling during flare-ups. Rest gives the tissue time to heal, and modified activity prevents further strain on the heel.

Custom orthotics provide additional support. They correct improper foot alignment, and they distribute pressure more evenly across the foot. Podiatrists design these devices based on an individual’s foot structure, which offers a more precise fit than over-the-counter inserts. When symptoms persist despite these measures, additional interventions may be evaluated, although a podiatrist will first reassess the treatment plan.

Consult a Podiatrist

Plantar fasciitis develops from a combination of repetitive strain, anatomical factors, and lifestyle habits, and it typically presents as sharp heel pain that worsens after rest. Some patients find relief through stretching routines, anti-inflammatory medication, and supportive orthotics. If you are experiencing persistent heel pain, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment planning. Early intervention may speed recovery and prevent the condition from becoming chronic.
