Understanding the Long-term Care Needs After Spine Surgery

Spine neurosurgeons are medical doctors with specialized training in brain, spinal cord, and nerve surgery. They treat herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and fractures, and they also manage care after the operation. Since recovery continues long after you leave the hospital, your daily habits affect how your spine heals. Here are some of the main steps of long-term care:

Contents
  • Avoid Bending and Lifting
  • Take Medications as Directed
  • Complete Physical Therapy
  • Allow Enough Time
  • Schedule a Spine Neurosurgeon Checkup

Avoid Bending and Lifting

Your spine needs time to stabilize, and certain movements place extra strain on the surgical site. When you bend at the waist, you increase pressure on the discs and hardware. Your spine neurosurgeon may set lifting limits for the first several weeks. These limits protect the repair during early healing.

  • Squat with your knees instead of bending forward
  • Hold objects close to your body
  • Avoid twisting your torso while carrying anything
  • Use a grabber tool for items on the floor

If a task requires heavy lifting, ask a family member or friend for help. Your surgeon will tell you when to raise your limits. Some people return to normal lifting after a few months, but others need more time.

Take Medications as Directed

Your surgeon may prescribe pain relievers, muscle relaxants, or nerve medications after surgery. Each drug has a specific purpose, and each one comes with dosing instructions. Follow the schedule on the label even if you feel fine. Missed doses make pain harder to control.

While opioids relieve severe pain, they carry a risk of dependence with long-term use. Many surgeons limit opioid prescriptions to a short period, and they switch patients to other options afterward. Ask your doctor about alternatives such as acetaminophen.

Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen may slow bone healing, so some surgeons restrict them after spinal fusion. Check with your care team before taking any over-the-counter product. Keep a written list of your medications so that every provider knows what you take.

Complete Physical Therapy

Physical therapy typically begins a few weeks after surgery, once your surgeon clears you. A therapist builds a program around your procedure and fitness level. Sessions typically run several times per week, and programs last for weeks. Home exercises form a large part of recovery, and your progress depends on whether you complete these exercises between sessions. A typical program includes the following elements:

  • Core strengthening to support the spine
  • Stretches for flexibility
  • Walks or low-impact aerobic activity
  • Posture and body mechanics training

Allow Enough Time

Healing times vary by procedure, and your age and health also play a role. Many people return to desk work several weeks after they have a discectomy or laminectomy. Physical jobs typically require a longer break. Your surgeon sets your timeline based on your imaging and exam.

Spinal fusion takes longer than other spine procedures. The bones need time to grow together, and full fusion may take many months. Until your surgeon confirms the fusion on imaging, avoid high-impact sports and heavy labor. Smoking slows bone growth and raises the risk of a failed fusion.

Schedule a Spine Neurosurgeon Checkup

Your surgeon tracks your healing through follow-up visits, which occur at different intervals. These visits may include X-rays, and they allow your surgeon to check the hardware. Call your neurosurgeon’s office about new numbness, weakness, fever, or worsening pain. Bring your medication list and questions to each appointment.
